Announcement on the Mid-Term Assessment for Doctoral Candidates Fall 2025

The mid-term assessment is a crucial component of doctoral training and serves as an important measure to ensure the quality of PhD education. In accordance with the Huazhong University of Science and Technology PhD Training Regulations(Postgraduate [2025] No. 4, hereinafter referred to as the "Regulations") and the Implementation Rules for the Mid-Term Assessment of Doctoral Candidates in the School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation(School Directive [2024] No. 2), the arrangements for the Fall 2025 mid-term assessment are as follows:

I. Assessment Participants

1. Currently enrolled doctoral students who have passed the thesis proposal defense.

· As stipulated in the "Regulations":

o Other PhD students should generally complete the mid-term assessment by the fifth semester, and no later than the sixth semester.

2. Doctoral students who have not completed the mid-term assessment within the stipulated timeframe.

II. Assessment Schedule

· Registration Period: October 11 – 17, 2025

· Assessment Date: To be notified separately after October 17 (The mid-term assessment will be organized centrally by the School).

III. Assessment Procedures

1. Registration and Application

(1) Complete and print one copy of the Application Form for Doctoral Mid-Term Assessment.

(2) Complete the basic information section of the HUST Doctoral Mid-Term Assessment Evaluation Form and print five copies.

(3) Complete the HUST Doctoral Mid-Term Assessment Form, filling in the information for Sections 1, 2 (partial), 3, and 4 as detailed in the notes at the bottom of the form. The "Supervisor's Comments" section must contain specific comments.

(4) Submit the materials from (1) and (2) above to the Graduate Office (Room Central 307, South No.1 Building by 12:00 PM on October 17. Also, complete and submit the mid-term assessment application in the Graduate Student Training System.

2. Defense Preparation

· Prepare the HUST Thesis Mid-Term Progress Report using the provided template.

· Prepare a presentation slideshow (PPT).

3. Oral Defense

· The School will arrange and convene the mid-term assessment defense session.

· Student presentation: 10-12 minutes (using PPT).

· Q&A session: 8-10 minutes (questions from the assessment committee).

· Assessment experts will complete the HUST Doctoral Mid-Term Assessment Evaluation Form(one form per expert per student).

4. Comprehensive Evaluation

· The assessment panel (excluding the student's supervisor) will conduct a comprehensive evaluation based on the student's course completion status, thesis progress, and academic conduct.

· The panel's evaluation comments will be recorded on the HUST Doctoral Mid-Term Assessment Form.

5. Document Submission

· After the assessment, the defense secretary must submit the following materials to the School's Graduate Office:

o HUST Thesis Mid-Term Progress Report(1 copy per student)

o HUST Doctoral Mid-Term Assessment Evaluation Form(5 copies per student)

o HUST Doctoral Mid-Term Assessment Summary Sheet(both electronic and printed versions)

6. Result Review

· The secretary will enter the defense details and records into the Graduate Student Training System.

· The supervisor and the School will subsequently review and approve the results.

IV. Additional Information

· Students requesting a deferral must complete the Application for Deferral of Doctoral Mid-Term Assessment(one printed copy, signed by both the student and the supervisor).

· Submit the deferral application to Ms. Ma in the School's Graduate Office by 12:00 PM on October 17.
