Abstract:
After  a very quick (bibliographical) overview of membrane computing, one considers two  typical research areas, related to the borderlines between universality and  non-universality and about efficiency and non-efficiency of P systems. Several  types of P systems are invoked: catalytic, spiking neural, numerical. Then some  "non-standard" research questions are suggested. A general issue concerning  natural computing is also discussed, synthesized in the question "do we dream  too much?" The presentation is informal, but familiarity with elementary  membrane computing facts is assumed.
Speaker’s  Short Bio:
Gheorghe  Paun, member of the Romanian Academy and of Academia Europaea, is a Romanian  theoretical computer scientist, with contributions to formal language theory,  computational linguistics, DNA computing, and membrane computing - this last  area initiated by him in 1998 (see the domain webpage at  http://ppage.psystems.eu). He has written a large number of papers and  monographs, some of them jointly with more than 150 collaborators, has edited  many collective volumes. His books on DNA computing and membrane computing were  also translated in Chinese.
